Jazz artist Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) is married to Renee (Patricia Arquette). Finding a videotape on his doorstep, they discover someone's shot the inside of their house. After notifying police, another surfaces... this time of him murdering his wife. Strangely, she really was murdered, landing him in jail. With no explanation, he wakes up, but as young mechanic Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). More strange, his girlfriend Alice looks just like Renee, but with blond hair instead of brown. As events further unfold, some connections between the two lives are made, while others continue without ever being adequately explained.
